Fit, focused and ready to fight
How banking institutions can get in shape for the battle ahead
Speaker: John Fursey, IBM Global Business Services
As the world recuperates from its recent economic malaise, banking institutions face a host of questions as they seek to improve the industry’s health and foster long-term growth. In addition to determining how to strengthen their financial fundamentals and create new avenues for sustainable revenue and profit growth, banking leaders need to address client trust and insight while simultaneously developing strategies to better manage risk. To get into shape and maintain fitness, banks must make a significant transformation to redefine their business models, restore their client relationships and reform the risk management culture.
This general session will explore the following topics:
- Banking institutions need to find new, sustainable sources of revenue and profit. To drive long-term success, they need to focus on their business models and make changes that enable growth, reduce costs and complexity, and concentrate on those areas in which the organization wishes to excel.
- Banking institutions must address the declining health of their client relationships. There is a clear trust gap between banks and their clients. To rebuild client relationships and re-establish trust, banks must understand what clients want, what they need and for what they are willing to pay.
- Banking institutions need to become more astute in their approach to risk. An enterprise-wide view of risk is essential incorporating an integrated risk management framework that transcends silos and cohesively addresses financial risk, compliance and governance, and fraud and financial crimes.

1. cView Mission: Possible
Operations Track
This session will be of interest to secret agents who have adopted the 2-module cView package, containing My Vision Portal Page and Report Wizard. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, will be to determine how the cView datasource is constructed! Celero’s eroWORKS Missions Force (Bill Boris and Barb MacLean) has already acquired some key intelligence to share with participants. Report to this safe house to learn:
- Table naming conventions. There are more than 500 tables in the cView datasource, so being able to determine a table’s function from its name is an important skill to have.
- Column naming conventions. It’s important to know these because they often appear when two or more tables are joined in a query.
- Qualifying techniques. Deploying certain tables in queries will cause a need for certain qualifiers to be used.
- Using eroWORKS to locate tables. The Service Rep and Loan Service Rep applications in eroWORKS can be used to locate the cView tables containing data you might be looking for. If you can identify a value on an account that you want to report on, you can identify the cView tables that holds the data. Our Celero operatives will show you how.
Before you begin your mission, the eroWORKS Missions Force will demonstrate how to combine all this knowledge into a working query.
2. Going green: Beyond the pursuit of clean air and water
Strategic Track
Attend this discussion featuring Priscilla Boucher of Assiniboine Credit Union and Dennis Cunningham from the International Institute for Sustainable Development to learn how credit unions can take responsibility and an active role in protecting the environment. You’ll gain insight on:
- The business case for going green
- The role of businesses in moving towards a sustainable economy
- The unique roles of credit unions and community-based financial service providers
- Sustainable development and the critical union among health, economic progress and well-being for all people
- The ways in which economies and communities can benefit in a carbon-constrained future
